Tuesday morning was a tragic start to the school year for Northwestern Local Schools in Lawrenceville, Ohio. At 8.16 am, a yellow school bus transporting 52 students was involved in a crash with a minivan on State Route 41. The bus driver attempted to swerve onto the shoulder to avoid the collision, but the two vehicles still collided.
The crash resulted in the tragic death of an elementary school student who was ejected from the bus. Another student was rushed to the hospital in serious condition, while 22 other students suffered non-life-threatening injuries and were taken to Dayton Children's Hospital for treatment. Thirteen of these students were taken by ambulance, and 10 were driven by their parents. The bus driver was also suffering from non-life-threatening injuries and was transported to Springfield Regional Medical Center.
The minivan driver also suffered non-life-threatening injuries. The bus came to rest on its side on a grassy area by the road, while the Honda Odyssey was totaled in its front section. A tow truck arrived to flip the bus back upright.
Ohio State Highway Patrol Trooper Tyler Ross stated that “It’s a tragic incident”, and asked the community for “space and patience and time as our community members, emergency personnel on scene, the families affected… start the healing process.” The crash is currently still under investigation.
The school district used social media to notify families about the crash, and canceled all afternoon preschool classes. They shared a statement that said, “We are still gathering information and will share it with you as it becomes available.”
It was a heartbreaking start to the school year, and the Northwestern Local Schools community is mourning the loss of one of their own.
