Spike Lee is set to take us on a journey through his creative genius with a new art exhibit coming to his hometown at the Brooklyn Museum. On October 6, the museum will open the “Spike Lee: Creative Sources” exhibit, which will showcase the Oscar-winning writer-director’s work.
The display will include over 300 pieces of inspiration from Lee’s projects such as “Do the Right Thing,” “Crooklyn,” and “Malcolm X”. These items will range from photographs, album covers, movie posters, letters, books, costumes, and film memorabilia. Organized into seven thematic sections, each featuring a clip from one of Lee’s films, the exhibit will explore the people, places, and things that have shaped Lee’s vision.
Kimberli Gant and Indira A. Abiskaroon have curated the exhibition. Gant said “By making Lee’s collection accessible to the public, this showcase celebrates his legacy while honoring his deep connection to Brooklyn, a place that has been an integral part of his storytelling.”
Numerous other Black American artists will also be featured in the exhibit, such as Kehinde Wiley, Deborah Roberts, Elizabeth Catlett, and Michael Ray Charles. Lee’s art will be complemented by memorabilia from renowned public figures like Nelson Mandela, Barack Obama, Shirley Chisholm, Malcolm X, James Baldwin, Angela Davis, Toni Morrison, Ella Fitzgerald, Billie Holiday, Lena Horne, and the painter Jacob Lawrence.
Attendees will get to see how works like Michael Ray Charles’ “Forever Free” were the inspiration for Lee’s 2000 film “Bamboozled.” Other memorabilia from Lee’s Brooklyn-based films like “Do the Right Thing” and “She’s Gotta Have It” will also be on display.
The “Spike Lee: Creative Sources” exhibit is the first major exhibition on Lee within his hometown of Brooklyn. It follows his personal collection that remains on view in the Academy Museum of Motion Pictures’ exhibition “Director’s Inspiration: Spike Lee.”
The exhibit will be open from October 6th, 2023 to February 4th, 2024, giving everyone the opportunity to explore Spike Lee’s work and creative process. This is a great chance to celebrate Lee’s legacy and recognize his deep connection to Brooklyn.
