Yesterday, parts of Queensland were hit hard by heavy rainfall, leaving both ends of the state drenched. It was a wet day along most of the coastline, following a previous intense rain event in the south-west earlier in the week. In the south-east, the Gold Coast experienced persistent rainfall overnight, with some suburbs recording over a month's worth of rain.
Tugun and Coolangatta were particularly affected, receiving 148mm and 134mm respectively in the 24-hour period leading up to 5am AEST. The north tropical coast also saw heavy falls, with 177mm recorded in South Mission Beach and 120mm in Tully. According to senior meteorologist Angus Hines from the Bureau of Meteorology, showers are expected to continue today along the east coast of the state, especially in areas south of Brisbane and in the north.
Hines reassured that the rain will clear up by this evening, making way for a pleasant weekend ahead. The sun will return and temperatures will rise on Saturday, after a cooler week so far. He did mention that there may be a few showers in the south-east over the weekend, but they will be much lighter compared to earlier in the week.
Due to the days of rain and storms, some parts of the state are now saturated and at risk of flooding. Minor flood warnings have been issued for the Upper Balonne, Maranoa, and Warrego rivers, while the Moonie River has a moderate flood warning in place. As this happens, southern Australia is preparing for a heatwave that is expected to last for several days, with temperatures reaching up to 36 degrees in Victoria and South Australia.
