Jade Thirlwall, the talented member of Little Mix, has opened up about her initial doubts of fitting in a girl group. Despite being the angel of our dreams now, the 31-year-old singer admitted that she once felt she was not "conventional" enough to join the group.
The Black Magic hitmakers were formed in 2011 on The X Factor, breaking all expectations and becoming the first group to win the popular ITV show. Jade, along with her bandmates Perrie Edwards, Leigh-Anne Pinnock, and Jesy Nelson, was thrown together after auditioning three times as a solo artist.
However, even though she was thrilled to finally make it through, the then 18-year-old star couldn't help but feel hesitant as she didn't believe she fit the stereotypical girl group image. "I didn’t see myself as a conventional girl’s girl," Jade shared with Rolling Stone UK. "I was nerdy and quiet. When they told me I was gonna be put in a girl group, I automatically thought of Pussycat Dolls."
Although Little Mix is currently on hiatus, with Jesy, 33, leaving in 2020, the bandmates still share an incredibly close bond. However, Jade revealed that she had expected the worst when she first signed up for the group. "I thought, 'Oh no, I’m not sexy—and if they’re bitchy, I’ll struggle because I’m not confrontational at all. I shrink at any drama,'" she confessed. But joining the group turned out to be the best thing for her confidence and understanding of sisterhood.
Despite her initial doubts, Little Mix went on to become one of the best-selling girl groups of all time, with 19 top 10 singles and five number ones. The band formed the first decade of Jade's career and her entire adult life, so she felt lost when the trio went on hiatus. "I didn’t know how to be a woman in my own right," Jade explained. "It took me a minute to get my independence back."
Her debut solo single, which landed her a top 10 chart slot, followed the precedent set by her bandmates Leigh-Anne and Perrie. However, the trio are no longer close to former bandmate Jesy, with Perrie revealing in an interview with Cosmopolitan that they haven't spoken in a long time. "We don’t talk, and haven’t done for a long time, it’s really sad, it’s heart-breaking," she shared.
In a recent interview with Metro, Perrie confessed that she had anticipated "starting from scratch" when she broke out as a solo artist after Little Mix announced their hiatus. "Your fans aren’t necessarily going to follow you as solo artists," she explained. "I kind of prepared myself to maybe get different fans or not keep the same fans."
