Siblings show their bond on Raksha Bandhan 2023 by donating kidneys to save each other's lives.
On the eve of Raksha Bandhan festival, Free Press talked to three sisters who saved their brothers’ lives by donating kidneys to them. Prachi Maheshwari, 26, Sushma, 32, and Mamata, 44, all of whom came to the rescue of their brothers by donating their kidneys, shared their experiences with Free Press.

Prachi Maheshwari, from Bhopal, donated one of her kidneys to her brother Ankur, 20, in March 2021. Ankur had been suffering from kidney-related problems since birth, and doctors had told them that a transplant would be necessary. Prachi had been working as an accountant with a CA firm. “I resigned from my job as I would have required a long leave and the employers wouldn’t allow me to,” she said. Prachi recollected the process of the tests and visits to hospital, medicines, and precautions. She is now happy to report that her brother has resumed his studies and she has started her own business.

Sushma, 32, from Kurwai, Vidisha district, donated her kidney to her brother Jitendra, who had been suffering from LgA nephropathy. As the eldest of four sisters and two brothers, Sushma took it upon herself to donate her kidney. “My children had grown up but my sister’s children were young. So, I decided to donate my kidney. Now, I am happy, my brother is happy, everyone is happy,” she said. Jitendra had to undergo dialysis for four months before the transplantation in February 2022. Now, his routine checkups are only once every three months.

Mamata, 44, from Indore donated her kidney to her only brother Atul Saxena, 47, in March 2022. Saxena had discovered he had only one kidney since birth in 2016. His sole kidney got infected and gradually stopped functioning, and in July 2021 he was admitted to a hospital in Bhopal and survived on dialysis for 10 months. Mamata’s husband and children readily agreed to her donating her kidney to her brother.

The courage and selflessness of these three sisters is admirable, and the Raksha Bandhan festival is the perfect time to reflect on the strength of the bond between siblings.
