Is the PS5 Pro a must have or not? It's a question on many people's minds at the moment, especially with the PlayStation 5 having only a few exclusives so far. The Reader's Feature at the weekend expressed concern that Sony seems to be going nowhere and the only rumours we hear are for hardware no one needs. I understand the worries but I'm a bit more optimistic than he is - surely Sony must have a few games they haven't announced yet?
It's still worrying though, and my point is that we don't know why Sony is doing this or what they think they're gaining from it. Then we have the PS5 Pro being rumoured. Is there really a demand for it? It's not like there are a lot of PlayStation 5 games to boost the performance of.
What's more, Sony has released the PlayStation 5, the PlayStation VR2, Project Q, and apparently the PS5 Pro next year. That's close to two grand in three years when this is one of the worst cost of living crises in recent memory. It's madness and I can't see anyone who already owns a PlayStation 5 buying a PS5 Pro. Not only because of the price but because it's pointless and a needless cash grab.
I'm sure modders are happy about the Project Q running Android but who else can afford it and who wants it? I have no interest in paying that much money to run PlayStation 5 games remotely. I'd be interested to hear from anyone in the Inbox who's excited about it.
On a different note, I recently played Final Fantasy 16 and thought it was pretty good. I liked the attempt to be more Western but it was a bit too Game Of Thrones inspired for my liking. The graphics were great but I was disappointed that Square Enix still won't commit to a proper open world environment. I think that would be much more groundbreaking compared to just the combat being turn-based or not.
Anyway, I recently purchased an Xbox Series X in anticipation of Starfield and I was pleasantly surprised to find Jade Empire at a £3 purchase. An 18-year-old Xbox game to introduce me to the new generation of consoles - perfect!
Finally, I just wanted to take a moment to remember John Gibson of Psygnosis fame who sadly passed away recently. His work on Microcosm was a major turning point for the games industry but his name is rarely mentioned. Sony should pay better homage to all of Psygnosis' legacy and I think there's potential for rebooting many of their games for the modern day.
Is the PS5 Pro a must have or not? That’s the question on many people’s minds. The Tuesday letters page of the weekend worried about Ubisoft’s all-digital future, as one reader praised Zelda: Tears Of The Kingdom’s Depths.
I completely understand the reader’s concerns that Sony is going downhill and the PlayStation 5 seems to be going nowhere. We do have rumours of hardware that nobody needs or wants, and nothing about games. Surely Sony has some games they haven’t announced yet. It’s hard to fathom why Sony is taking this route and what they might be gaining from it.
The PS5 Pro is also causing speculation. Why would Sony make it when there’s no demand for it? So far we have only three PlayStation 5 exclusives. What would the Pro do to improve the performance of these games? We need more games, not more consoles.
In the last three years, Sony has released the PlayStation 5, the PlayStation VR2, and this year the Project Q. Then next year, apparently they have the PS5 Pro. That’s almost two grand in three years during the worst cost of living crisis in living memory. It’s madness and I don’t think anyone who already owns a PlayStation 5 will buy a PS5 Pro. It’s too expensive and pointless.
The Project Q is also out this year, but who wants it and who can afford it? I don’t think I would use it even if I got it for free.
I recently finished Final Fantasy 16 and I thought it was pretty good, although not my favourite in the series. The attempt to make it more Western was mostly successful. However, they still won’t commit to a proper open world environment. I think they’re too scared to go the extra step. With their art style and graphics, it wouldn’t become a Skyrim clone. But that extra step would be much more groundbreaking.
In anticipation of the upcoming Starfield, I recently purchased a Xbox Series X. I couldn’t believe it when I saw Jade Empire at only £3. It was the perfect game to tide me over until Starfield.
I have to admit, I didn’t like the Depths in Zelda: Hammeriron at first. But I spent the whole weekend exploring and it was addictive. I loved that there was no hand-holding and seeing everything lit up bright was so satisfying.
The death of John Gibson of Psygnosis fame was sad. His work on Microcosm and Sony’s subsequent interest in it was a major turning point for the games industry. Unfortunately, his name is rarely mentioned. I hope Sony will learn to pay proper homage to all of Psygnosis’ legacy. A reboot of their games with modern graphics would be amazing.
