New Delhi: On Tuesday, Union Home Minister Amit Shah conducted a meeting to review the implementation of three new criminal laws in Jammu and Kashmir. The meeting was attended by Chief Minister Omar Abdullah, who later shared that certain areas requiring immediate attention were identified during the meeting.
CM Abdullah highlighted that in a Union Territory, the responsibility of implementing laws falls on the central government rather than the elected state government. However, he also hinted that the state government may play a role in raising awareness about the new laws.
Prior to this review, HM Shah had conducted a similar exercise in 11 other states. However, the security situation in J&K was not discussed during the meeting.
Earlier on February 14, HM Shah chaired a review meeting in Maharashtra to discuss the implementation of the three new criminal laws. He urged the state to establish a model Directorate of Prosecution system in accordance with the new laws. Chief Minister Devendra Fadnavis was present at the meeting, along with other officials from the Union Home Ministry and state government.
HM Shah reiterated the Modi government's commitment to providing a swift and transparent justice system for the citizens. He stressed the importance of registering crimes in a timely manner and working towards a conviction rate of over 90% for cases with sentences of more than seven years. The Home Minister also emphasized the need for collaboration between the police, government lawyers, and judiciary to ensure that the guilty are punished promptly.
He also suggested that senior police officers should regularly monitor cases involving organized crime, terrorism, and mob lynching to prevent the misuse of these sections. HM Shah also recommended the implementation of a system for recording evidence through video conferencing in facilities such as prisons, government hospitals, banks, and forensic science laboratories. He also suggested the adoption of CCTNS 2.0 and ICJS 2.0 in Maharashtra.
Overall, HM Shah emphasized the need for a strong and efficient legal system to maintain law and order in the country. He urged all stakeholders to work together towards achieving this goal.
