The Supreme Court on Tuesday granted a reprieve to students in the Indian state of Madhya Pradesh. A two-judge bench, presided by Justice BR Gavai and Justice Prashant Mishra, extended the deadline for admissions to technical, management and other professional courses in the state until October 20, 2023.
The Association of Technical and Professional Institutes (ATPI) had filed a petition with the Supreme Court seeking an extension to the last date of admissions, which had ended on August 31, 2023. ATPI argued that even after two rounds of counselling, thousands of seats were still left vacant and some colleges had not admitted up to 20% of their seats. There were around 1.25 lakh seats in Madhya Pradesh.
The ATPI was represented in court by Advocate Siddharth R Gupta and Mrigank Prabhakar. Gupta argued that the counselling process for admission to National Institute of Technology (NITs) and Indian Institute of Technology (IITs) was based on the JEE-mains merit list, which also continued till August 31, 2023. This, he said, had caused students to take less interest in the state counselling process.
The admission process for 75,000 seats of various engineering, technical and management colleges in Madhya Pradesh is managed and coordinated by the Department of Technical and Education. The ATPI approached the Supreme Court pleading that the whole counselling process in the state was inordinately delayed, forcing many students to leave for other states and resulting in empty seats.
The Supreme Court's decision to extend the admissions deadline until October 20, 2023, provides a much needed reprieve to students in Madhya Pradesh. With the extra time granted, students now have a better chance of securing admission into their desired professional courses.
