The Met Office has issued a stark warning as Storm Agnes makes its way across the UK. The first named storm of the year has already made landfall in Northern Ireland, bringing with it winds of up to 70mph.
The storm is making its presence felt with trees falling down and a roof being blown off in Ireland. Met Office meteorologist Marco Petagna has warned that the evening rush hour could be especially tricky with strong winds and rain making for difficult driving conditions. He added that some of the worst conditions are still to come, with rain warnings in place for central and western Scotland.
Injuries and danger to life from flying debris are a possibility, as well as a small chance of risks from large waves and beach material being thrown onto sea fronts, coastal roads and properties.
The storm has already caused dramatic waves and strong gusts of wind across Ireland, and a spokesman for the Met Office said that the strongest gusts are likely to be felt in eastern parts of Northern Ireland, southwest Scotland, west and northwest Wales, Cumbria and Lancashire. These areas could see gusts of between 50-60mph, and perhaps 65-75mph over hills and around some coasts. The strongest winds are expected during the late afternoon and evening.
