A woman in Kolkata recently reported to the police that she was almost abducted by three individuals while she was out at night in Sandeshkhali, West Bengal. This area has been in the news lately due to allegations of sexual abuse against leaders of the Trinamool Congress (TMC). According to sources, the woman is an active participant in the protests against the reported atrocities in the riverine region.
The police were informed about the incident at 2:30am and a case was filed against three suspects, two of whom were named by the victim. However, no arrests have been made yet, as confirmed by a police officer to PTI. A video, shared on social media by BJP leader and lawyer Priyanka Tibrewal, shows the woman claiming that she was gagged and dragged out of her house. She also mentioned that her daughter's cries and the presence of locals scared off the abductors and they left her near a pond.
PTI could not verify the authenticity of the video. The woman also alleged that she was pressured to testify in court that the reports of atrocities against women in the area were false. Later, in an interview with a local news channel, she revealed that the abductors were discussing among themselves about killing her to silence the Sandeshkhali protests.
On Wednesday, Tibrewal posted on social media about her visit to Sandeshkhali, where TMC goons were allegedly threatening people to prove the innocence of Sheikh Shahjahan. She also shared the story of a woman named Anwesha Mondal, who had come forward to talk about the atrocities committed by Dilip Mallick, who had abducted her a few days ago. In response to her complaint, TMC goons reportedly abducted her, tied her up, and left her near a pond to die. Tibrewal and her team took the woman to the police station.
Meanwhile, state BJP president Sukanta Mazumdar told reporters that there has been continuous pressure and threats on protesters to withdraw their complaints, and the attempt to abduct the woman is proof of TMC's efforts to suppress the reports of atrocities. A series of videos have surfaced from Sandeshkhali, where a BJP leader can be heard claiming that the protests by women were staged at the direction of the leader of the opposition, Suvendu Adhikari. Another video shows some of the women, who had previously filed rape complaints, stating that they were forced to sign a blank paper by BJP leaders and pressured to go to the police station.
In a third video, the same BJP leader can be heard saying that over 70 women were given Rs 2,000 each to take part in the protests against local TMC leaders. On May 12, BJP workers protested against the circulation of these videos, which they claim are an attempt to defame their party leaders in Sandeshkhali. They also allegedly heckled local TMC legislator Sukumar Mahata, blaming him for spreading misinformation about the sexual abuse complaints.
