Sally Phillips is taking on an exciting new role as Pip in the stage adaptation of BBC Radio 4’s Bleak Expectations. This pantomime-esque comedy, written by Mark Evans and directed by Caroline Leslie, is set to feature an all-star cast - with celebrity turns taking it in turns to play Pip as the narrator. This includes Stephen Fry, Sue Perkins, Nish Kumar, Stephen Mangan, Jo Brand, Adjoa Andoh, Jack Dee, Alexander Armstrong and Lee Mack.

It promises to be an inventive staging full of energy and English language gags that are sure to have you in stitches. Plus, no need to worry about the darker moments of Dickensian storytelling - this will be a night of pure laughter and joy.

For Sally, this role brings her full circle as she returns to dressing as a man - an experience she had during her time at the Oxford Revue. Despite her efforts to strive for serious acting roles, she found herself getting laughs, and pivoted to comedy. She looks back on the experience with fondness, as she was able to express her creativity in a way that was unanticipated.

Sally Phillips is excited to star as Pip in the stage adaptation of BBC Radio 4’s Bleak Expectations, a daft and hilarious mash-up of Dickensian tropes and pantomime-ish romp. Joining her in the role of narrator will be a slew of celebrities, including Stephen Fry, Sue Perkins, Nish Kumar, Stephen Mangan, Jack Dee, Alexander Armstrong, Lee Mack and more – a move that will bring Sally's career full circle as she previously dressed up as a man in the Oxford Revue. ‘It’s going to have some inventive staging, loads of energy and really, really funny language gags that are peculiarly English,’ says Sally, ‘with hilarious metaphors and pure laughter from start to finish. It’ll be a night in which you can have your spirits lifted by one of those familiar Dickens stories without having to go through Nancy’s rape and murder.’
