Dmitry Medvedev, the former Russian President between 2008 and 2012, has warned that the presence of British soldiers training Ukrainian troops in Ukraine could bring about World War III. This was in response to a suggestion made by UK Defence Minister Grant Shapps that there could be a future deployment of military instructors to support Ukrainian forces.
Medvedev, whose anti-western stance is well known among close allies of Putin, said that any presence of UK troops on Ukrainian soil would make them ‘legal targets’ that would be ‘ruthlessly destroyed’. He added that German factories producing Taurus missiles could also be targets should these munitions find their way to Kyiv.
However, earlier today Prime Minister Rishi Sunak appeared to row back on Mr Shapps’ comments. Speaking at the start of the Conservative Party’s annual conference in Manchester, he clarified that ‘there are no British soldiers that will be sent to fight in the current conflict’.
Mr Shapps had further called on British defence firms to step up production and suggested the UK was intent on helping Ukraine obtain Nato membership. He said that ‘it might well be possible one day in the future for us to do some of that training in Ukraine’.
The former president’s comments echo similar warnings he’s made in the past. Earlier in July, he suggested that completely ‘crazy’ Western nations were bringing the world closer to a global conflict. It is clear that Medvedev is making a strong statement here and that the presence of British soldiers in Ukraine is something he is strongly against.
