Rename London Overground lines to reduce confusion.
The London Overground Network is set to receive new line names in order to make it easier to navigate. Mayor of London, Sadiq Khan, promised this revamp in his 2021 re-election manifesto, and posters have been put up across Overground stations inviting members of the public to engage with the project.

Transport for London is working closely with the Commission for Diversity in the Public Realm, as well as local groups and transport historians, to establish broad themes for each line. The hope is that the new names will reflect the diverse history and communities of the city.

Deputy Mayor for Transport, Seb Dance, has said the move will help clear up the ‘confusing’ network map and provide more focused information about disruptions. They will also be carrying out an Equality Impact Assessment to gauge any issues that may arise.

The revamp is expected to cost £6.3m over the next two years and will span six routes: Stratford to Richmond/Clapham Junction, Euston to Watford Junction, Gospel Oak to Barking Riverside, Liverpool Street to Cheshunt/Enfield Town/Chingford, Highbury & Islington to New Cross/Crystal Palace/West Croydon/Clapham Junction, and Romford to Upminster.

Mr Khan believes this project is a way of re-telling forgotten stories about the city. ‘Naming the lines will not only help educate visitors about our amazing city and incredible history but will also make it easier for people who live, work or visit London to more easily navigate the city,’ he said.

The change won’t impact trains, services or stations, so customers can still make the same journeys. This Overground revamp is set to happen alongside the roll-out of the new Ultra Low Emission Zone (Ulez) scheme in London.
