We are saddened to hear of the passing of Reggie Chaney, a University of Houston basketball team member who reached the NCAA Final Four in 2021. According to KHOU 11, Chaney was found unresponsive in a bedroom at a home in Arlington, Texas on Monday, and was pronounced dead at the scene. Arlington police officials have said that it does not appear foul play was involved.
Head coach Kelvin Sampson called Reggie "his security blanket" after Chaney was named the conference's Sixth Man of the Year in March. Chaney had played for two seasons with the Arkansas Razorbacks before going to Houston, and played there for three seasons in 104 games.
The University of Houston Men's Basketball team acknowledged Chaney's death, saying, “We are heartbroken by the passing of forward Reggie Chaney #3️⃣2️⃣ will be deeply missed by all who knew and loved him #RIPReggie”
To help Chaney's family with costs related to his funeral, a GoFundMe was created with the permission of his mother, Mikki. All donations will go directly to Reggie's immediate family.
Chaney's life was cut short at just 23 years old, and he was about to head to Greece to play his first season for Psychiko B.C. Our thoughts and prayers are with his family during this difficult time.
