After so much speculation, Rockstar Games has finally announced that Red Dead Redemption is coming to modern platforms. This "conversion" of the 2010 game will be developed by Double Eleven Studios, the same studio behind Fallout 76 and Minecraft Dungeons.
The PlayStation 4 and Nintendo Switch versions will be available on August 17th and will include the Undead Nightmare DLC. Unfortunately, Xbox players won't be able to join in on the fun since the game and its DLC are already available through the Xbox's backward compatibility feature.
Rockstar hasn't said whether the re-release will include any graphical or technical improvements, only mentioning that it will offer new language support for Simplified and Traditional Chinese, Korean, Polish, Brazilian Portuguese, Russian, and Latin American Spanish.
The initial reception from fans has been mixed. The YouTube trailer has an even split of 14,000 likes to 14,000 dislikes, with the top comments clearly leaning towards the negative. On Twitter, fans are expressing their disappointment in not having a full remake or remaster, as well as the lack of a PC version.
"When it comes to disappointment, you're true rockstars!" says one fan. "Our expectations were low but holy c***," says another. Some are also pointing out the hefty price tag of $49.99 for what is essentially a port of a 13-year-old game.
It's clear that Rockstar's announcement has not met the expectations of many fans. Whether these sentiments will remain the same once the game is released remains to be seen, but it's clear that Rockstar is going to have to work hard to convince their fans of the merits of this re-release.
