As a long-time Star Wars fan, I was thrilled to see Ubisoft’s Star Wars Outlaws at the Xbox Games Showcase. While I have an Xbox and Game Pass, and will inevitably end up playing Starfield, I have to admit that Outlaws looks far more interesting to me.
Starfield seems to be part of a trend that is very unappealing in open world games, where the worlds are just too open. This started with Zelda: Breath Of The Wild, which had a much too large world, with far too little to do in it. Starfield appears to follow this style, with the footage showing a largely barren environment.
On the other hand, Outlaws was all about the character of Kay, who was like a sassy female Han Solo. She had personality and talked like a real person, with the dialogue and facial animation being much more believable than in Starfield. Kay also got into exciting scraps with close-up fighting and shooting. The starfighter battles were among a destroyed space station, and the open world was filled with activity both in the sky and on the ground.
I’m sure Starfield will be a huge game, with many planets and a lot of freedom. However, I would prefer a game that looks as busy and interesting as Outlaws, even if it means sacrificing some of the freedom.
Star Wars Outlaws looks like the open world Star Wars game that I have been waiting for. It has certainly got me more excited than Starfield. I’m curious to know how many planets and open worlds it has, and I only wish it had received a 30-minute breakdown at the Xbox Games Showcase.
