Raising money to provide grants to Black-owned businesses to support their success.
In 1936, Victor Hugo Green published The Green Book, a guide for African Americans who traveled through the Jim Crow South. The Green Book provided direction, showing Black people which places were safe for them. To honor this guide's legacy, The Modern Green Book was founded in Birmingham, Alabama. This nonprofit organization helps Black businesses across the country.

Recently, The Modern Green Book has kicked off a weeklong celebration to raise money for grants that will support Black-owned businesses. Theo Edwards Butler, the founder of The Modern Green Book, said that these grants are meant to provide relief to Black businesses and help them thrive. The goal is to raise $25,000 by the end of the year.

Aja Penix, the founder of the Birmingham Black Repertory Theater Collective, said that The Modern Green Book provides a valuable network for Black businesses. The Modern Green Book Culture & Community Fest Week will celebrate this network and offer opportunities for businesses to connect.

The fest week starts with a Black Business Networking Game Night at Polaris Co-Working & Event Space in Woodlawn. Attendees can network, win prizes, and enter for free with an RSVP. On Saturday, August 26, the festivities will continue at Sloss Furnaces National Historic Landmark with a festival, live music, and vendors. There will be a Black-owned beer and wine garden, and admission will be $5 for students and $10 for adults. For $100, you can get VIP status.

The Modern Green Book Culture & Community Fest Week is a wonderful opportunity to support Black-owned businesses and celebrate the legacy of The Green Book. Be sure to check out the events and join in the festivities.
