Queen Latifah is once again at the forefront of the "It's Bigger Than Me" initiative, a movement raising awareness about obesity and its impact on our society. Having previously moderated the "It's Bigger Than Me Live" panel, Queen Latifah is now taking the initiative one step further.
In an interview with BLACK ENTERPRISE, she discussed the importance of an environment of care free of judgement and stigma when it comes to obesity. To that end, Queen Latifah partnered with Novo Nordus to create the Inclusive Obesity Care symbol which will be displayed in healthcare facilities to signal a safe, compassionate environment for obesity patients.
Research shows that four out of five African-American women are overweight or obese, and yet, stigmas around obesity and weight management care remain. A study found that 66% of participants who had experienced weight stigma, had experienced it from their own doctors. This symbol is an effort to prevent further judgement of obesity patients.
"This is what we want to see at doctor's offices because obesity is a medical condition. And you need to be able to seek healthcare, good healthcare, safe healthcare, compassionate healthcare that is designed not just for any one type of person, but for all people," said Queen Latifah.
The Queen also shared how she takes care of her own health. She regularly visits Switzerland for body massages and follows a strict workout regime. To learn more about her health habits, watch the full interview below.
