Quavo speaks out against gun violence in DC following Takeoff's death.
Migos rapper Quavo has joined the fight against gun violence after the tragic death of his nephew Takeoff in 2022. Quavo, whose real name is Quavious Keyate Marshall, spoke on a panel at the Congressional Black Caucus Legislative Conference in Washington, D.C. on September 20th. He was joined by Sen. Raphael Warnock, Rep. Lucy McBath, and Community Justice Action Fund Executive Director Greg Jackson.

The conversation focused on how gun violence can be combatted with powerful advocacy and community intervention strategies. Quavo discussed how he felt called to take action. He said, “I need to step up to the plate and hit a home run. I have to do something about it, so it won’t happen to the masses – especially in our culture. I don’t want this to happen to the next person. I want to knock down these percentages.”

Quavo was joined at the panel by Takeoff’s mother, Titania Davenport. Afterwards, they met with U.S. Vice President Kamala Harris, who praised them for taking a stand. Greg Jackson also gave Quavo props for sitting down with Congress to make change. He said, “His voice and commitment around community violence intervention could provide more resources for those who are most at risk.”

Quavo spoke of the need to change behavior as aggressively as we focus on safety and ownership and access. He also noted that this can’t be done without resources for those in the community who are overlooked and forgotten.

Since Takeoff’s murder, Quavo and his family have taken steps to prevent similar incidents from happening again. They started the Rocket Foundation in honor of the fellow Migos member. Quavo said, “I’m a survivor. I was there, so at the same time, it could have been both of us. So, I look at this as me being alive, I have to do this job and make everybody’s aware that losing my nephew, you could be in the same position.”

Takeoff’s death is one of many hip-hop stars lost over the last four years. Others include Young Dolph, PnB Rock, Pop Smoke, and Nipsey Hussle. Quavo is hoping to see an end to these tragedies, and with his advocacy and community intervention strategies, that goal can become a reality.
