Russia has agreed to station tactical nuclear weapons on Belarusian territory, as per a statement from President Vladimir Putin on Saturday, reported by Tass news agency.
Putin emphasized that this will not break any existing nuclear nonproliferation treaties, and that the US had already stationed nuclear weaponry in the territories of European allies.
Belarusian President Alexander Lukashenko, a close ally of Putin, had raised the issue of hosting tactical nuclear arms in Belarus, which borders Poland.

Putin revealed that Russia will have built a storage facility in Belarus for tactical nuclear weapons by the 1st of July, and that Russia will not be transferring control of the arms to Minsk.
He also noted that 10 aircrafts with the capability to carry tactical nuclear weapons are already stationed in Belarus.
The US recently implemented sanctions against Belarus in response to their continued support of Russia's war in Ukraine.
The sanctions targeted seven members of the Central Election Commission, two state-owned automotive companies and President Alexander Lukashenko's personal Boening 737 aircraft.
The State Department additionally imposed visa restrictions on 14 people involved in "policies to threaten and intimidate the Belarusian people."
Documents leaked last month exposed a secret plan by the Kremlin to annex Belarus and incorporate it into Russia by 2030.
