Rourkela: The newly refurbished leopard enclosure at the Indira Gandhi Park Zoo in Rourkela Steel Plant was proudly unveiled on Thursday by the Director In-Charge, Atanu Bhowmick. This exciting event coincided with the arrival of two majestic leopards, which were warmly welcomed by senior officials from RSP.

During the inauguration, Bhowmick took the opportunity to review the ongoing developments within the park. As someone who has been visiting IG Park since childhood, he expressed his desire to make it even more appealing, especially for children. He was delighted to witness the addition of new features and improvements to existing ones.

At the event, the Director In-Charge also took the time to honor Suresh Oram, a dedicated contractual employee who has displayed exceptional care for the leopards. Oram was recognized for his outstanding contribution and commitment to the well-being of these magnificent creatures.

The renovated enclosure is now home to two leopards, a male and a female, who were relocated from Rajiv Gandhi Zoological Park in Pune, Maharashtra. This relocation was part of a Central Zoo Authority-approved exchange programme. After completing their quarantine period, the leopards are now ready to be viewed by the public.

This addition to IG Park follows a series of recent upgrades, including the refurbishment of the musical fountain, the introduction of a mesmerizing laser show, and the beautification of the boating facility and doll museum. In exchange for the leopards, the zoo contributed one male and three female four-horned antelopes.

IG Park Zoo, the second-largest zoological park in Odisha, is home to 251 animals and birds. The latest arrivals include two bears and a newborn Nilgai, adding to its diverse collection of wildlife. The zoo is renowned for its successful breeding programmes and active participation in animal exchanges to enhance its biodiversity. The entire exchange programme was expertly coordinated by Dr Abhijit Biswas, DGM & In-Charge of the Zoo Development Programme.
