Great British Bake Off judge Prue Leith, 83, tells us about her upcoming live show, Nothing In Moderation, what she’s most looking forward to about working with Alison Hammond and why her husband should have married Mary Berry instead.
Are you leaning more towards terrified or excited about headlining the London Palladium with your one-woman show?
I'm savoring it and finding it quite addictive due to the wonderful time I have and the lovely audience. When I was contemplating doing this, I asked Paul Hollywood for his opinion and he said, 'God no, it's completely exhausting.' He was too polite to say 'and you're 30 years older'. Then I asked Joanna Lumley and she said, 'Do it, you'll love it.'
How did Nothing In Moderation come about?
Roughly five years ago, I was seated next to a television producer called Clive Tulloh at a Sunday lunch party and was telling stories that made him laugh. He then said, 'You ought to do a one woman show like Joanna.' Initially, I thought 'Yeah, yeah. Joanna's quite celebrated and I don't think that'll ever work.'

You discuss your whole career in Nothing In Moderation, from Bake Off to being a successful restaurateur. Can you share any wild showbiz tales?
When I ran a restaurant, David Bailey visited one night in the heatwave wearing only flip flops and a '70s string vest. The table next to him complained about his lack of a shirt, and I said, 'I do not have a dress code. It's not my job to tell people how to dress.' I offered them another table and a complimentary bottle of wine, but they declined. I then went to David and said, 'That table finds your lack of a shirt offensive.' He jumped up and said, 'Offensive? I'll give them offensive' and started to unzip his trousers. The funny thing is, I cannot recall how that story concluded.

Let's talk Bake Off. Alison Hammond is joining the series. You must be excited?
I think it'll be great, not only because of her character and personality, but also due to the fact that she's a woman. When there were three men and me, because of their numbers, they would get sillier and sillier and I never got the jokes. They can break into hysterics over the word sausage. They're like four year olds. So, I look forward to having a woman around.
We're sorry to ask, but did you see any of the headlines about a necklace you recently wore on the show?
I saw all the headlines about my necklace being a sex toy. That's news to me.

After originally being hesitant to take on the show, she was convinced by her friend and television producer, Clive Tulloh, who had just come back from doing a tour with Joanna Lumley. Nothing In Moderation covers Prue's career from Bake Off to being a successful restaurateur and she's eager to share some of her wild showbiz tales. She's also excited for the addition of Alison Hammond to the Bake Off family - especially as a woman, as she sometimes struggled to understand the jokes with the three men. The headlines surrounding a necklace she wore on the show being a sex toy came as a surprise to her.
