In central Kolkata, outside the Utkal Bhawan, a group of around 200 people gathered for a demonstration. They were members of Bangla Pokkho, a community organization, and they were protesting against the alleged assault of migrant labourers from West Bengal in Odisha.
With placards in hand, the protestors chanted slogans denouncing the violence against their fellow workers. They claimed that the attacks were being carried out under the false accusation that the migrants were actually Bangladeshis.
"We are a peaceful community, but enough is enough. Our workers are being targeted and harmed in Odisha. If the assaults do not cease within the next 24 hours, we will be compelled to escalate our protest," declared Garga Chatterjee, the general secretary of Bangla Pokkho.
The organization's spokesperson revealed that they had received assurance from a senior official in the Odisha government. The official had promised to take necessary steps to stop these attacks and bring the perpetrators to justice.
"We believe in peaceful coexistence, and we have brought this issue to the attention of our Chief Minister as well. She has also raised the matter with the Odisha government, and we are hopeful that it will be resolved," Chatterjee added.
In fact, Chief Minister Mamata Banerjee herself had reached out to her Odisha counterpart, Mohan Charan Majhi, on Sunday. She urged him to take immediate action and put an end to such incidents. The protestors were hopeful that their voices would be heard, and justice would be served. This was reported by the Press Trust of India (PTI).
