As summer approaches, we can’t help but to be excited to spend more time outdoors. The longer days and the sunshine are great for getting Vitamin D, but we also need to be mindful that too much sun can cause harm to our melanated skin.
The National Library of Medicine states that Black skin is more susceptible to sunburn, early skin aging, and risks for skin cancer than fairer skin complexions. Black men, in particular, are especially at risk, with research revealing melanoma to be more deadly in Black men. To enjoy the sunshine while keeping our skin safe, it is important to have a layer of protection from the sun’s harmful rays.
Fortunately, there are several Black-owned sunscreen brands to choose from. Tennis legend Venus Williams has her own sunscreen lotion, Eleven Game Set Match, that is lightweight, absorbs quickly, and hydrates the skin. Lastly, Rihanna’s Fenty Skincare line has a vegan sunscreen, Hydra Vizor Invisible Moisturizer, that includes kalahari melon and niacinamide to moisturize and smooth pores.
