As summer approaches, we can’t help but to be excited to spend more time outdoors. The longer days and the sunshine are great for getting Vitamin D, but we also need to be mindful that too much sun can cause harm to our melanated skin.
The National Library of Medicine states that Black skin is more susceptible to sunburn, early skin aging, and risks for skin cancer than fairer skin complexions. Black men, in particular, are especially at risk, with research revealing melanoma to be more deadly in Black men. To enjoy the sunshine while keeping our skin safe, it is important to have a layer of protection from the sun’s harmful rays.
Fortunately, there are several Black-owned sunscreen brands to choose from. Tennis legend Venus Williams has her own sunscreen lotion, Eleven Game Set Match, that is lightweight, absorbs quickly, and hydrates the skin. Actor and TV personality Dorion Renaud also has his own brand, Buttah Tinted Mineral Facial Sunscreen, which is gentle and free of parabens and chemicals. For those with melanated skin, Shontay Lundy has created Black Girl Sunscreen, which dries clear and protects the skin from the sun. Dr. Anne Beal has AbsoluteJoi, a mineral sunscreen that soothes and hydrates sensitive skin. Lastly, Rihanna’s Fenty Skincare line has a vegan sunscreen, Hydra Vizor Invisible Moisturizer, that includes kalahari melon and niacinamide to moisturize and smooth pores.
So while we enjoy the summertime sun, let’s make sure we’re keeping our skin safe by using Black-owned sunscreen brands!
