August 2nd 2023.
Black August Month has officially kicked off, a collaborative effort between Power Haus Creative and its community partners Mahmoud Abdul Rauf, Students for Imam Jamil, Black Art in America, and Black Power Media. This event is a widespread call to action, encompassing fasting, raising awareness, and offering resources for political prisoners. It was founded in California during the 1970s after the prison uprising and the deaths of Johnathan and George Jackson.
This year, the month-long initiative is used to spread awareness for civil rights activist Jamil Abdullah Al-Amin, formerly known as H. Rap Brown. Al-Amin has been incarcerated since 2002, but his contributions to the Black liberation movement remain intact. He is the face of the Anti-Riot Act, a part of the Student Nonviolent Coordinating Committee, and is now in Supermax prison under a wrongful conviction of murder.
Kairi Al-Amin, Power Haus Creative, and its partners continue to fight for justice after over two decades. They've put out a petition in 2020, calling for a new trial and alleging cruel and unusual punishment and wrongful conviction. The petition has gathered over 75,000 signatures in three years, but still has a long way to go to reach its goal of 150,000.
In line with this mission, participating partners will also be “Feeding the Community” throughout August. This includes virtual sessions, where scholars and activists will share different information and resources. Food drive donations will be accepted at the Black Art in America Gallery at 1802 Connaly Dr. in East Point, Georgia. On Aug. 28, Mahmoud Abdul Rauf will speak at the gallery on an “Art of Activism” panel. To find out more information about the scheduled events, check out @powerhauscreative on Instagram.
The fight for justice for Jamil Abdullah Al-Amin is ongoing, and the Black August Month initiative is a great way to spread awareness and rally for a new trial. Through the collaborative efforts of Power Haus Creative and its partners, we have the opportunity to make tangible noise and fight for Al-Amin's legacy.
