The arrests were made in connection to a recent string of gas cylinder thefts that had been reported in the Mayurbhanj district. The police team also managed to recover a total of 28 cylinders, a TATA pick-up van, an Indigo car, and several mobile phones from the suspects.
The eight individuals who were arrested were identified as Shakti Ranjan Pani, 28, and Soumya Ranjan Pani, 25, both hailing from Sauri village under Kuliana police limits, Ajaya Kumar Behera, 22, from Titri village, Sipu Singh, 27, and Umashankar Naik, 25, both from Balimundali village, Santu Chouhan, 36, residing in Pariakuli village, Nirmal Gochhayat from Tulasi Chaura area under Town police limits in Baripada, and Raj Narayan Panigrahi, 50, from Suthanga village under Khantapada police limits in Balasore district.
According to the police report, the thefts had taken place on January 25, 2024, when a significant number of gas cylinders were reported missing from the Dhanapur godown under Shamakhunta block. The owner of the godown, Sharada Prasanna Mohanta, had lodged a written complaint at Sadar police station, prompting the authorities to launch an investigation into the matter.
On Wednesday, the police received a tip-off about 10 gas cylinders being transported in a pick-up van and a car. Acting swiftly, they were able to track down the vehicles and apprehend five individuals who were travelling in them. During the interrogation, Shakti, one of the arrested suspects, confessed to stealing the gas cylinders from the godown and selling them to Santu, Nirmal, and Raj. The police then proceeded to arrest the three and seized 18 cylinders from their possession. However, the investigation is still ongoing to determine if any other individuals were involved in this illegal activity.
It's a relief to see that the diligent efforts of the police have led to the arrest of these individuals and the recovery of the stolen goods. The authorities have assured us that they will continue to gather more evidence and bring the culprits to justice. As for the stolen gas cylinders, they will be returned to their rightful owner, Mr. Mohanta. This serves as a reminder that crime does not pay and that the law will always catch up with those who choose to engage in unlawful activities.
