The Gold Coast community is mourning the loss of one of their most beloved members - police dog Hondo. After a dedicated seven-year career in the force, Hondo has passed away, leaving behind a legacy of bravery and loyalty.
During his time on the force, Hondo was a top performer, with countless arrests to his name. He fearlessly chased down criminals, including a wanted man in 2015 and a teenage car thief just earlier this year. Working alongside his handler, Nick Donald, Hondo was a trusted and reliable partner in the Gold Coast dog squad.
Donald fondly remembers some of their most memorable moments together, including the time Hondo sniffed out an offender hiding in a rather unconventional spot. "He's gone down the back of a barbecue and I thought he's looking for a sausage or is there a bit of meat down there?" Donald recalls. "All of a sudden, the barbecue flips over and out comes the offender screaming while Hondo's got them by the leg."
Despite his tough reputation on the job, Hondo was a gentle and loving soul at home. He enjoyed playing ball games at the beach and going out on the boat with his family. After his retirement, Hondo was adopted by the Steel family with the help of the Blue Paws association. "He lived the life of luxury," Kristy Steel shares. "There was air conditioning, there were scotch finger biscuits, and he even had a hydro bath every two weeks."
Hondo's last day was filled with love and affection from his loved ones, including a special visit from Santa. He will be deeply missed by all who knew him, but his legacy will live on through the memories and stories shared by those who were lucky enough to have him in their lives.
