Mumbai: The Nagpada police have successfully dismantled an organized crime gang that had been operating a scheme of renting out vehicles and failing to return them. This gang had devised a plan of using stolen mobile phones to contact vehicle owners. An FIR had already been lodged against them at Mumbai's Santacruz police station for failing to return a car.
Details received by the Nagpada police revealed that on July 29, Farid Abdul Chali received a call from a person named Niyaz Khan, who requested to rent out two cars. Although the cars were to be returned by August 1, Khan failed to do so, and Chali was unable to contact him. Therefore, Chali lodged a complaint with the Nagpada police station on August 10.
In response to the complaint, Senior Police Inspector Mahesh Kumar Thakur assigned the investigation to police officers Sachin Kadam and Kiran Chowgle. During the inquiry, two women, Zeenat Khan and Jiya Sachdev, were apprehended. As a result of interrogating these two, a total of seven individuals were arrested and more suspects were identified.
DCP Akbar Pathan revealed that these criminals had been using stolen mobile SIM cards to disguise their identities. Lamman Sayyed of Powai, one of the arrested individuals, was found to be specialized in stealing mobile phones from laborers in small village factories, which were then passed to Sachdev. Sachdev then used these phones to book rental vehicles.
Once the cars were booked, Zeenat Khan and Shahdab Shaikh, two of the accused, would collect them. These individuals would then take the cars outside Mumbai and sell them to other people using fabricated documents. During this investigation, the Nagpada police also apprehended Amin Shaikh, Rahil Khan, and Swapnil Ghule.
The police managed to confiscate three vehicles, including a stolen Toyota Crysta and Fortuner. These cars are currently being secured by the Nagpada police. In addition, a case has been filed at the Santacruz police station in regards to the failed return of the Crysta car.
