Police brave cold weather and villagers' suspicion to nab accused in Jogeshwari-Gym Stabbing Case; boy helps guide them to Gonda, UP.
Mumbai: After a shocking incident of stabbing at a Jogeshwari-based gym, police at Oshiwara were determined to go to great lengths to arrest the accused. The 24-year-old accused had disappeared immediately after the crime, switched off his phone, and left his home with his family, leaving the cops in bewilderment.

Informants tipped the police off about the accused’s whereabouts in Gonda, Uttar Pradesh. Senior police inspector of Oshiwara, Mohan Patil formed a team of four people, led by API Sandeep Patil, to investigate. As they moved ahead in the investigation, tiny clues started to come to light, pointing to Gonda.

The team set off for Uttar Pradesh, but they could not ask anyone about the accused for fear of alerting him and allowing him to flee. Patil’s team had to rely on informants and technical inputs from other teams, with the temperature in Gonda dropping as low as 12 degrees Celsius.

It was dark when his team arrived in Gonda, and they were further dismayed to find that the accused’s house was located in a remote area. The team spent the entire night sitting in a field outside the village, shivering in the cold. When they entered the village between 6:30 and 7 am on Tuesday, they were too late.

The villagers had already alerted the accused and he had escaped on a ‘kuccha’ road known only by the local villagers. Despite the inhabitants defending him and thwarting the police’s attempts, a small child had seen the accused and provided information about his whereabouts.

The police team travelled another 12 to 13 kilometers with the local police, and finally managed to trace Ahmed near a petrol pump on a national highway, arresting him. It was revealed during the investigation that Ahmed had asked all his family members to switch off their phones to avoid being located by the police.

A local court in Gonda approved the transit remand of Ahmed, and he is set to be brought to Mumbai soon. Ahmed will later be produced in the Dindoshi court.

The incident occurred on December 6, when Ahmed and the victim, Mohammad Nayaf Baloch, a gym trainer, had exchanged their smartwatches with each other. When Baloch demanded his watch back, Ahmed refused and attacked him with a knife, stabbing him in the neck and chest repeatedly. The next day, Baloch approached the police and registered a case against Ahmed for attempt to murder.
