On the morning of Independence Day, Prime Minister Narendra Modi delivered a powerful speech in New Delhi, where he made a strong case for the implementation of a Uniform Civil Code. He stressed on the urgency of having a secular civil code and getting rid of any discriminatory communal codes. According to him, it is essential to abolish laws that divide our society.
Citing the Supreme Court's repeated discussions and orders on the Uniform Civil Code, the Prime Minister highlighted that a large section of the country shares the view that the current civil code is communal and discriminatory. He reminded everyone that this was the vision of our Constitution-makers and it is our responsibility to fulfill it. The Prime Minister urged for thorough and widespread discussions on this matter and invited everyone to share their opinions.
He firmly stated that any laws that divide our country along religious lines have no place in a modern society. He emphasized the need for a "secular" civil code to eliminate religious discrimination. "Time demands a secular civil code. And then we will be free of religious discrimination," he added.
PM Modi's remarks hold significant weight as both the BJP and Union Home Minister have promised to implement the UCC nationwide, following the approach taken in Uttarakhand, during the 2024 general elections. The UCC aims to establish a common set of laws for personal matters like marriage, divorce, inheritance, and succession for all citizens. Article 44 of the Constitution, which is a directive principle of state policy, also advocates for the UCC. It is worth noting that personal matters have been governed by religion-based civil codes since Independence.
After hoisting the national flag at the Red Fort for the 11th consecutive Independence Day, PM Modi also spoke about the government's efforts to improve accessibility for persons with disabilities. He mentioned the government's focus on sign language and the Sugamya Bharat Abhiyan as a reflection of their deep respect for the dignity of persons with disabilities. The Prime Minister also praised the achievements of our paralympians, stating that their successes showcase the strength and potential of every Indian. "When our athletes in the Paralympics display their newfound strengths, it reflects the strength of our collective spirit," he said.
