In his Independence Day speech, Prime Minister Narendra Modi addressed the nation and expressed his concern about the increasing atrocities against women in the country. He emphasized the importance of having a serious discussion about these issues and ensuring that the perpetrators of these heinous acts are given strict punishment, including the possibility of the death penalty.
"It pains me deeply to once again talk about the atrocities against women from the Red Fort today. As a society, it is crucial that we acknowledge and address the alarming rise in such crimes. The widespread outrage against these acts is a clear indication that we cannot turn a blind eye to this issue any longer," the PM stated.
He further added that swift investigation of such crimes, especially those committed against women, is imperative. "We must ensure that those responsible for these monstrous deeds are punished without delay. This will not only deliver justice to the victims but also instill confidence in society," he said.
The Prime Minister also highlighted the need for a change in the way such incidents are reported and discussed in the media. "While incidents of violence against women are widely discussed, the news of the culprit being punished often gets buried in a corner. We must change this narrative and have extensive discussions about the consequences of such actions," he asserted.
Speaking about the welfare of working women, PM Modi announced that the government has increased the maternity leave from 12 weeks to 26 weeks. "We not only respect women, but we also make decisions that are sensitive to their needs. Our aim is to ensure that the government does not become an obstacle in a mother's journey to raise her child and nurture them into responsible citizens," he stated.
He also highlighted the progress made in empowering women through self-help groups, with 10 crore women joining such groups in the last 10 years. "Financial independence of women leads to their inclusion in decision-making processes within households, which eventually brings about a positive social change," PM Modi added.
In conclusion, the Prime Minister reiterated the need for a collective effort to combat the atrocities against women and create a society where women feel safe and empowered. "Let us work together towards building a better and more inclusive India," he said.
