Plan ahead and check for train, tube, & motorway works before travelling in Aug 2023.
August can be a struggle for those heading off for the holidays, especially if you’re trying to avoid delays caused by roadworks. Case in point: last year’s nine mile long queues at Dover! And this year, trains could be in for a rough time due to the overtime ban, as well as potential disruptions to Transport for London services.

But with a bit of planning, you can save yourself some time and hassle. Knowing about upcoming roadworks in advance is a great way to keep your journey time to a minimum. So how do you find out what’s happening?

Let’s start with trains. Network Rail is expecting engineering works to take place all over the country from Saturday 26 August to Monday 28 August. Some of the major works include no service between London’s King’s Cross and Thameslink services between Bedford/Luton/Kentish Town/Plumstead from the Saturday to the Monday. And don’t forget the replacement buses between London Bridge and Streatham Common!

Staying in London, there are also major works on the Tube over August. The Waterloo and City Line will be closed throughout the month, while the Bakerloo Line is only running up to and including Thursday 17 August. There will also be no service between Canning Town and Stratford International from Saturday 19 August to Monday 28 August. Don’t forget to check the Elizabeth Line, Piccadilly Line and tram services for potential closures.

Finally, National Highways offers a detailed ‘road closure’ tool which allows you to input the date you’ll be travelling and the key motorways/roads to see exactly which closures are in force, and when. For example, this week sees various overnight closures on the M11 from 9pm to 5am.

So there you have it! A bit of advance planning and you can avoid the delays and make your journey a breeze. Check out National Rail’s ‘incidents’ page, TfL’s engineering works calendar, and National Highways’ road closure tool for the latest updates. And remember, roadworks can change at short notice, so make sure to keep checking back!
