Pinky Cole, the founder of Slutty Vegan, has finally reached a settlement with three former employees at her Brooklyn location. The former staffers were awarded a lump sum of $10,000 under the Fair Labor Standards Act, 11 Alive reports.
The lawsuit was brought by two former managers of the Brooklyn location and included claims of unpaid wages and bonuses. One manager claimed to have never received a quarterly bonus of $7,000 along with overtime rates for working over 40 hours per week outside of his managerial duties. An assistant general manager also alleged that they were not paid a $4,000 quarterly bonus and overtime pay for extra work. The store's certified trainer also said his overtime pay was not compensated and his pay was "miscalculated".
At the time of the lawsuit, Cole publicly stated her stance on the matter via an Instagram post. She wrote, “Since I was a kid, I have only operated with integrity. I don’t lie, I don’t steal and more importantly, I DON’T PLAY WITH PEOPLE’S MONEY.” She added that the lawsuit was only “alleged” and that she does not operate in a “fraudulent spirit”.
Slutty Vegan was founded in August 2018 with the mission of providing plant-based food late at night. Since then, the chain has expanded rapidly with 13 locations across the country. This includes 5 locations in the Metro Atlanta area, two locations in Georgia, one in Alabama, and two in New York City.
Cole is now a part of the Time100 Next list, which is a list of 100 innovators who are shaping the future. Despite the lawsuit, she remains committed to running her chain of vegan eateries with integrity.
