Paige Lord, an artificial intelligence ethicist, is questioning the PGA Tour for its negligence when it comes to AI images of golfers of color. In a TikTok video, Lord showed how the AI images of two minority golfers, Tony Finau and Collin Morikawa, had "rugged backgrounds" while the white golfers were in neutral gray.
Lord believes it is important to address two things related to this issue. The first is that bias in AI exists and is largely dependant on what it has been trained on. For example, if the AI has been trained on photos of people of color standing in a dilapidated area, that is what it will generate.
Lord also believes the PGA Tour's social media management should be more responsible and take a look at what the AI produces before posting it online. She said the PGA Tour has to understand that AI has bias and that it is their responsibility to ensure they are not posting harmful images.
The photos were posted on the PGA Tour's Instagram account and the images are not the only issue the Tour has with diversity. With only four Black golfers, Tiger Woods, Harold Varner III, Cameron Champ, and Joseph Bramlet, they make up less than 0.5% of the 250 Tour regulars.
Fortunately, there are HBCU schools with golf programs featuring both men’s and women’s teams, such as North Carolina A&T State University. This is where former NBA Sixth Man Of The Year and Finals Champion J.R. Smith plays after attending college following his retirement from the NBA.
The PGA Tour is taking action to address these issues by having Tiger Woods join the Board to help players voice their concerns regarding the LIV Golf Deal. This is a great step towards creating a more diverse and equitable environment in the golf world.
