Paul Merson has had his say regarding Arsenal's recent acquisition of Kai Havertz from Premier League rivals Chelsea. The Gunners completed a £65m deal for the 24-year-old Germany international last week, who signed a five-year contract at the Emirates Stadium.
Havertz spent three years at Stamford Bridge, scoring 19 goals in 91 Premier League games and even the winner in the 2021 Champions League final against Manchester City. Despite his mixed spell in west London, the Blues were unwilling to sell him until they realised he wasn't going to sign a new deal.
Merson admitted Havertz didn't have the greatest season last year, but he is still adamant the German will thrive at his former club. He said on Twitter: "Kai Havertz will make Arsenal a better team. Good signing."
Havertz said he is "super excited" to join Arsenal and desperate to win trophies under Mikel Arteta. He said: "It's super exciting for me to be joining this amazing club and to be part of the Arsenal family. This club has such a big history, and I hope we can achieve lots of things. The mentality in the Arsenal squad is very high and you can feel that. That was one of the reasons why it has been so hard to play against Arsenal recently."
Arteta also commented on Havertz's arrival, saying: "Kai is a player of top quality. He has great versatility and is an intelligent player. He will bring a huge amount of extra strength to our midfield and variety to our play. We welcome Kai and his family to Arsenal Football Club and we are all excited to start working with him when we start pre-season training soon."
