Patrick Mahomes is already looking ahead to life after his football career. The two-time Super Bowl champion has his sights set on NFL ownership.
TMZ broke the story that the 28-year-old superstar quarterback is joining an ownership group of celebrity backers of the Formula One Alpine team. In response to the news, Mahomes spoke about his plans for other investments.
“I think Tom Brady is trying to do it right now, but that's definitely where I want to get to,” he said. “I love this sport and want to give back in any way possible. When I'm done playing, I'll still be a Chiefs fan, but I'll also still have that competitive edge.”
Currently, the NFL does not allow active players to join ownership of any teams. However, Mahomes has already taken steps to invest in other sports. He has stakes in the Milwaukee Brewers and a women's soccer team, The Kansas City Current.
“I'm always looking around,” Mahomes said. “I can't do it in the NFL while I'm still playing, so I'm looking into other sports. It's difficult to get into the NBA and all that, but I'm keeping my ears open. If I'm given the opportunity, I'll take it.”
Should Mahomes be successful in his ventures, he'll join a very short list of former NFL players to become team owners. In May, Tom Brady became the third former player in history to have a stake in a franchise when he joined the Las Vegas Raiders, as reported by ESPN.
