Over 27 million people now live in Australia.
This year, Australia's population has officially exceeded 27 million people. The latest data from the Australian Bureau of Statistics shows that the primary driving force behind this growth is overseas migrants. In fact, in the 12 months leading up to March 31, there was a 2.3% increase in the population, which amounts to 615,300 new individuals.

It's worth noting that most of this population boom is a result of migration arrivals, even though there was a slight decrease from 559,000 to 509,800 between September and March. On top of this, there were 289,700 births and 184,200 deaths registered in Australia during this time period.

According to Beidar Cho, the head of demography at the ABS, Australia's population now stands at 27.1 million. He also pointed out that 83% of this growth is attributed to net overseas migration, while the remaining 17% comes from natural increase (the difference between births and deaths).

The ABS also provided information on the different states and territories within Australia. It was found that Western Australia experienced the fastest annual population growth at 3.1%. This was followed by Victoria at 2.7% and Queensland at 2.5%. On the other hand, Tasmania and the Northern Territory saw the lowest increase at 0.4% and 0.8%, respectively.
