In Kolkata, the Election Commission of India has begun the first stage of the Special Intensive Revision process in West Bengal, which started on Tuesday. So far, they have distributed a total of 1.73 crore enumeration forms to the voters in just three days.
According to a source from the Chief Electoral Officer's office, the current count of 1.73 crore was recorded as of 4pm on Thursday, but the final number for the day will be updated later. As of now, the CEO's office has received 1,11,469 applications for Booth-Level Agents (BLAs) for both BLA-1 and BLA-2 categories.
For those who may not know, a BLA-1 represents a political party for an entire Assembly constituency while a BLA-2 represents the same party for a specific polling booth. Out of the 1,11,469 applications received, the majority came from the Bharatiya Janata Party (BJP) with 38,021 applications, followed by the Trinamool Congress with 35,527 applications, and the Communist Party of India (CPI) with 29,360 applications.
The Congress party has also submitted 7,197 applications so far. All of these activities related to the Special Intensive Revision are moving forward smoothly and on schedule, according to the insider from the CEO's office.
Out of the 7,66,37,529 registered electors in West Bengal, those who were already included in the last intensive revision of the electoral roll in 2002 will only need to fill out the enumeration forms and submit them without any additional documents. This will ensure that their names remain on the voter list. It's worth noting that the last SIR in West Bengal took place in 2002.
However, those whose names were not listed in the 2002 electoral roll will need to submit one of the 11 documents specified by the Commission to retain their names on the voter list. The entire SIR process is expected to be completed by March of next year, just in time for the crucial Assembly elections in West Bengal. It's a big year for the state, and the Election Commission is working diligently to ensure a fair and accurate voter list for the upcoming elections.
