The residents of Maui are receiving an incredible show of support in the wake of the devastating wildfires that have ravaged the island for the past three days. Billionaire media mogul Oprah Winfrey put her thoughts and prayers into action when she arrived at the War Memorial Gymnasium, the shelter for evacuees, to donate much needed supplies and her time.
Winfrey recently purchased a $6.6 million property on the island and she has been volunteering at emergency shelters. Local non-profit Kāko’o Haleakalā shared an Instagram post saying, “Mahalo Nui Oprah for following through! She returned with cots, pillows, and toiletries for the people in the shelter in Wailuku. She even spent some time with the people there. It was very much appreciated.” CNN reported that this is not the first time Winfrey has stepped in to help. In 2019, she opened up a private road on her property to help local residents flee during a brush fire that swept through the area.
Winfrey has no plans to stop giving once the worst has passed. She said it was important that she show up to give her support. “I came earlier, just to see what people needed, and then went shopping because often you make donations of clothes or whatever, and it’s not really what people need,” she said. “So, I actually went to Walmart and Costco and got pillows, shampoo, diapers, sheets, pillowcases.”
Winfrey is one of many celebrities who have stepped up to help Maui and its people; including Floyd Mayweather, who covered the cost for 68 displaced families to fly to Honolulu, and Jason Momoa, of Native Hawaiian ancestry, who offered his sincere condolences and ways people can help both on the ground and online.
