Mumbai recently reported a shocking case of extortion. A 25-year-old laboratory technician has filed a complaint against fraudsters who have allegedly hacked her phone and taken photos and videos without her knowledge. The police are currently investigating the veracity of the hacking claim.
The complainant reported that on July 2, she received a message from an unknown number claiming that her phone had been hacked. The fraudsters threatened to release the photos if she didn’t respond or block them, and instructed her to make a video as directed or pay ₹6 lakh.
The woman was understandably distressed by the situation and informed her husband immediately. She blocked the number and changed her SIM card in order to prevent further trouble. However, the fraudsters continued their threats and sent her an obscene photo of her on WhatsApp last Saturday.
Unable to handle the harassment any longer, the woman decided to approach the police. A complaint has been registered under Sections 66D, 66E and 67A of the Information Technology Act, 2000. According to the police, the city reports around 12 e-crime cases on a daily basis. This incident is a sad reminder of the vulnerability of technology and the importance of cyber security.
