On Christmas Eve, tragedy struck the Citadel Mall in Colorado Springs, Colorado. The Colorado Springs Police Department responded to a report of shots fired at the mall shortly after 4:30pm. Officers determined that a fight had broken out between two groups of people, resulting in one man being found dead inside the mall with a gunshot wound. Two other men were found with at least one gunshot wound each and were rushed to nearby hospitals in serious condition. A woman was also transported to a hospital with minor injuries.
Heather Cunningham, a Christmas shopper who was at the Vans store, said she saw people screaming and running. The Vans workers immediately got the shoppers to the back of the store, locking the doors and bolting them shut. Cunningham said that she could still hear the commotion outside of the store and it was a terrifying experience.
The Colorado Springs Police Department said that there was no known threat to the community and the mall was closed and cleared. Several suspects were detained by police, although a shooter was not immediately identified. Police investigated whether the shooter was among the victims.
