On December 2nd, Omar Fateh took to social media to share some exciting news - he was running for mayor! In his announcement, he mentioned the recent re-election of Donald Trump as a driving force behind his decision to enter the race.
Fateh, a member of the Minnesota Democratic Farmer-Labor party, has made a name for himself as a progressive voice within the state's legislature. He has championed policies such as funding free college tuition for low-income residents and ensuring a minimum wage for rideshare drivers. In fact, one of his initiatives, which also provides additional protections for these workers, just went into effect this month.
Currently representing District 42, which includes parts of south Minneapolis, Fateh hopes to continue his work with the progressive city council to support the working-class community. He believes that with the right leadership, real change can be achieved.
"As a member of the Minnesota Senate, I have witnessed firsthand the power of a progressive legislature when paired with the right executive," Fateh shared in his statement. "That is why, as Mayor, I will collaborate with the progressive City Council to produce tangible victories for our neighbors and uplift those who are struggling to make ends meet. Minneapolis is home to individuals who are eager to invest in long-term solutions that will bring security and stability to our communities. We are hardworking individuals who love our city and we deserve a Mayor who works just as hard as we do."
In the upcoming 2025 election, Fateh will be challenging the incumbent, Mayor Jacob Frey. If elected, he would make history as the second Somali American mayor in both the U.S. and Minnesota, following in the footsteps of Nadia Mohammed who became the first when she was elected mayor of St. Louis Park, Minnesota in 2023.
This news comes at a time when the current administration has been met with much criticism and controversy, including their proposed ban on Muslims entering the U.S. Fateh, along with other Muslim-American leaders, have been vocal in their opposition to this discriminatory policy. As London's first Muslim mayor, Sadiq Khan, has done before, Fateh also rejects Trump's "exception" to the proposed ban. He believes that all individuals, regardless of their faith, should be treated with respect and have the opportunity to thrive in the communities they call home.
