Gabby Thomas, a rising star in the world of track and field, is proving that she can excel in multiple areas of her life. Despite the demanding schedule of training for the 2024 Paris Olympics, she also makes time to volunteer at a healthcare clinic. When asked about the challenges of balancing both her athletic and volunteer commitments, the Harvard neurobiology graduate shared, "It's definitely a balancing act, but I wouldn't have it any other way. I love being able to switch gears and have a completely different focus when I come home from the track. And when I'm at the clinic, I can't wait to get back on the track."
It is clear that Gabby's dedication to both her sport and her volunteer work is fueled by her passion for both. Even after grueling training sessions, she finds renewed energy and purpose at the clinic. "When I'm exhausted and struggling to catch my breath after practice, I remind myself how lucky I am to be doing what I love and making a living from it," she shared.
To further her athletic career, Gabby moved to Austin, Texas, to train while pursuing her master's degree at the University of Texas. She credits her resilience and determination to her mother, Jennifer Randall, who raised her as a single parent while also obtaining a Ph.D. "Watching my mom overcome so many challenges and achieve her dreams while also starting a non-profit to help others get an education was incredibly inspiring," Gabby said.
While track and field has always been Gabby's main focus, her mother instilled in her the importance of education. This dual focus has been vital to Gabby's success both on and off the track. After completing her master's in public health in May, Gabby is now fully concentrated on her Olympic training. Although her mother hopes she will one day pursue a Ph.D., Gabby is currently putting that on hold to focus on her athletic career.
At the recent U.S. Olympic Trials, Gabby solidified her spot on the U.S. Olympic team by winning the 200-meter final with an impressive time of 21.81 seconds. This victory, along with her bronze medal from the Tokyo Olympics and silver from last year's World Championships, has cemented her status as a top contender in the sport.
In her commanding race, Gabby led from start to finish, beating out top track star Sha'Carri Richardson. She will be joined on the U.S. Olympic team by two first-time Olympians, Brittany Brown and McKenzie Long, who will also compete in the 200 meters. With her remarkable performance and unwavering determination, Gabby Thomas has proven that she is a force to be reckoned with in the world of track and field.
