It has been found that those aged 70 and above who take fewer than 2,000 steps daily are three times more prone to having a heart attack or stroke compared to those who take 4,500 steps per day. Moreover, the research revealed that taking an extra 500 steps each day, equivalent to an additional quarter of a mile, could result in a 14% reduction in the risk of cardiovascular disease, heart attack, stroke or heart failure.

Erin Dooley, an assistant professor of epidemiology at the University of Alabama at Birmingham School of Public Health, America, commented on the findings by saying, ‘Steps are an easy way to measure physical activity, and more daily steps were associated with a lower risk of having a cardiovascular disease-related event in older adults.'

She further advised that while it is important to maintain physical activity, daily step goals should also be attainable, and added that they were 'surprised to find that every additional quarter of a mile, or 500 steps, of walking had such a strong benefit to heart health'. Dooley concluded by advising people over the age of 70 to start by trying to get 500 more steps per day.

It has been indicated that taking an extra 500 steps each day, or a quarter mile of walking, was linked to a 14% decrease in the risk of having a heart attack, stroke, or heart failure.

‘Steps are an easy way to measure physical activity, and more daily steps were associated with a lower risk of having a cardiovascular disease-related event in older adults,’ commented Erin Dooley, an assistant professor of epidemiology at the University of Alabama at Birmingham School of Public Health.

‘It’s important to preserve physical activity as we age, yet daily step goals should also be achievable,’ said the lead researcher of the study.

‘We were startled to observe that every extra quarter of a mile, or 500 steps, of walking had such a strong benefit to heart health. While we don't want to minimize the importance of higher intensity physical activity, stimulating small increases in the number of daily steps also has noteworthy cardiovascular advantages,’ she added.

Dooley recommended that people over the age of 70 should start by attempting to get 500 more steps per day.
