Dàna M. Langford and Tenisha Gaines opened the doors to The Village of Healing in Ohio with a mission to address racial disparities in maternal and infant health faced by Black women and children. Their patient-centric approach focuses on enhancing the well-being of Black women through specialized care that is attentive to their cultural and social needs.

A staff of all Black women provides health services at the practice, including gynecology, obstetrics, mental health services, vaccines, and telehealth. Nurse practitioner Renee’ Makupson shares how meaningful it is to be able to work with her community and be able to relate to them at the same time.

The Village of Healing is more than just a healthcare center. It offers a variety of transformative programs to empower and uplift women. The Mother-to-Mother Mentorship Program provides one-on-one support to Black mothers experiencing maternal mental health complications. Additionally, the Black Professional Women’s Group is open to women 30 years and older with bachelor’s degrees or higher, creating a supportive community to embrace their journeys and uplift one another.

Langford and Gaines established The Village of Healing in 2019, collaborating with other Black-led organizations. In 2020, a study published by The Institute for Women’s Policy Research named Cleveland the fifth worst city for Black women in the United States. The co-founders are dedicated to creating a comfortable place for Black women to receive high-quality healthcare services and to build strong communities for them to grow personally and professionally.
