Officials start counting elephants in Nayagarh and Boudh.
The much-awaited elephant census has finally kicked off this Wednesday, with officials from the Nayagarh Mahanadi Wildlife and Boudh forest divisions coming together to conduct the survey. This includes utilizing various equipment such as camera traps to cover all the elephant corridors in the designated areas. The Nayagarh Mahanadi Wildlife Division, in particular, has set up a total of 36 platforms across its four ranges - Kushang, Chhamundia, Banigochha East, and Banigochha West. As for the platforms, 22 have been installed in Kushang and Chhamundia, while 14 each are found in Banigochha East and West. In each of these platforms, three trained personnel from the Forest department have been stationed, as per the division's range officer Sansar Bargia.

Meanwhile, the Boudh forest division has also made significant efforts in preparing for the census, constructing a total of 45 platforms across its two ranges - Madhapur and Purunakatak. Of these, 18 are located in Madhapur and 27 in Purunakatak. To ensure the smooth execution of the survey, a total of 145 Forest department staff members have been assigned to carry out the census. According to officials, the platforms have been strategically placed near water bodies, as elephants are known to frequent these areas, making it easier to accurately count their numbers.

This census is crucial in understanding the current elephant population and their movement patterns in these regions. It will also help in identifying any potential threats or areas that require conservation efforts. The Forest department personnel involved in the survey are trained to handle any unforeseen situations and will work diligently to gather accurate data. The census is expected to provide valuable insights that will aid in the conservation and protection of these majestic creatures.
