Officer from Odisha police detained for attacking female home guard.
The city of Bhubaneswar was buzzing with news as a police inspector, Tapan Kumar Nahak, was taken into custody on Wednesday. It was alleged that he had deceived a woman home guard by engaging in a physical relationship with her, under the guise of marriage. Officials confirmed that Nahak was arrested and brought before the court, and also suspended by the Director General of Police (DGP), Yogesh Bahadur Khurania.

Jagatsinghpur Superintendent of Police, Bhawani Sankar Udgata, provided more details, stating that Nahak's suspension came just an hour before his arrest, in order to ensure a fair and unbiased investigation. The DGP, in an official order, stated that a complaint had been received against the former Inspector-in-Charge (IIC) of Kujanga police station in Jagatsinghpur district, for misconduct and misuse of his position. Disciplinary proceedings were being considered against him.

The order went on to state that, in the interest of public service and to maintain transparency in the inquiry, Nahak was to be suspended with immediate effect. It also mentioned that during this period, he would be under the disciplinary control of the Deputy Inspector General (DIG) of Police, Central Range, Cuttack. It was revealed that while serving as the additional IIC of Jagatsinghpur police station two months ago, Nahak had developed a physical relationship with the victim, who was also working at the same station. This relationship was based on his promise to marry her.

However, after being transferred to the IIC of Kujang police station, Nahak, who was already married, refused to fulfill his promise, leading to a dispute between the two. The victim, a home guard, filed a complaint against him at Jagatsinghpur police station on Monday. Upon learning that a case had been registered against him, Nahak fled from Kujang police station. But he was eventually arrested from Khurda on Tuesday, according to a police officer.

This was not the first time that Nahak had been suspended. In 2023, while serving as the IIC of Phiringia police station, he was suspended for neglecting his duties. It was reported that he had fled the police station during a violent incident, which was linked to allegations of police involvement in illegal ganja trade. The news of his latest suspension and arrest has caused quite a stir in the city and has raised concerns about the conduct of law enforcement officials.
