Monday, August 26: Centuries ago, when a severe drought struck the area known as the Seven Thousand Seeme, and not a drop of water was found in the huge lake in the village, a bagina was offered to Honnamma, the taluk’s water goddess, who has a divine history of being a garland to the lake.

The program to offer a bagina to the historically famous and never-dry Honnamma lake in the Doddamalte Gram Panchayat area near here was carried out with devotion in the presence of thousands of devotees.

Every year on the day of the Gauri festival, thousands of people, including hundreds of newlyweds, come to offer a bagina to Honnamma's lake and pray for all auspiciousness.

On the day of the Swarnagauri festival, this morning, Sri Honnamma's mother, Basaveshwara, performed special puja at the temple with various religious rituals and then placed the bagina (in the form of a lotus, saffron, bichole, ravike kana, mirror, bangle, flower, and phalatambool) on the golden stone ledge next to the temple and offered it. After offering the bagina, Honnamma's family members first offered the bagina. Then Sri Siddeshwara Basaveshwara and the Swarnagauri Honnamma Temple Committee offered the bagina to the lake.

Speaking to the media after visiting the temple and offering prayers to Basaveshwara, Siddeshwara, Ganapati, Honnamma Mother and then offering a bagina to the lake, he said that the government will provide Rs. 50 lakh for other basic facilities including a walking path around the lake, a well-equipped kitchen near the temple, toilets and other facilities.

Along with this, the competent authority will be dealt with to provide boating facilities in the lake. The MLA said that discussions will be held with the committee for the development of the entire area, including the construction of a barrier wall on the side of the lake, and the necessary funds will be provided.
