The Chief Minister of Bhubaneswar, Mohan Charan Majhi, expressed his delight at the significant progress that has been made since the implementation of the new criminal laws. He proudly announced that the conviction rate in cases where the accused were found guilty has increased by a remarkable 87.6% by the end of 2025. This progress can be attributed to better coordination and efficiency in the investigation, prosecution, and judicial processes.
During his visit to the Bharatiya Nyaya Sanhita exhibition at the IDCO Exhibition Ground in Unit III, Bhubaneswar, the Chief Minister extended his appreciation for the efforts put into educating the public about India's revamped criminal justice system. He also commended a street play that creatively depicted how the new system functions through fictional incidents. The exhibition, which was organized by the Odisha Police and inaugurated by Union Home Minister Amit Shah on March 6, showcases the implementation of three new laws - the Bharatiya Nyaya Sanhita, Bharatiya Nagarik Suraksha Sanhita, and Bharatiya Sakshya Adhiniyam.
These laws, which came into effect on July 1, 2024, aim to modernize the criminal justice system with a focus on victim rights, time-bound investigations, and the use of scientific evidence. The Chief Minister also announced that the exhibition would be extended by two days, allowing more people to learn about the new criminal laws. He praised the stalls set up by the Home Department, describing them as of high quality.
Additionally, he appreciated the street play for spreading awareness and highlighted the 166% increase in the registration of Zero FIRs in 2025, making access to justice easier for citizens. Majhi emphasized the commitment of Prime Minister Narendra Modi to ensuring safety and justice for people, which is reflected in the Bharatiya Nyaya Sanhita. He stated that the exhibition is an important initiative to raise public awareness about the effectiveness and impact of the new criminal laws.
He also emphasized efforts to strengthen policing in the state through the establishment of the National Forensic Science University and a Central Forensic Science Laboratory. The Chief Minister highlighted the MoUs signed with IIT-Bhubaneswar and Rashtriya Raksha University, which aim to train police personnel in the integration of modern technologies and provide advanced skill training. The exhibition was attended by senior police officers, and students from various schools and law colleges also participated in the event.
