Back in June, Shana Taylor, a Staten Island resident, decided to take a chance and follow her dream of opening a “plant cafe” with her family. She recently spoke to SiLive about her idea and the holistic health concept behind Koze Vibes Plant Shop Cafe.

Joining forces with her parents, Denise Armfield and Michael Taylor, who already owned successful cafes, bakeries, and other businesses in the area, Koze Vibes was born. Shana's brother even utilizes the space of the cafe for his Pokémon card business, Big Grin. Her sister, Tanisha Taylor, designed the store for them.

The team took advantage of their individual business experience and strengths, while making sure to keep prices affordable for their patrons. Shana explained that her mom makes cupcakes and other baked goods, as well as coffees, teas, lemonades, and homemade refreshers. They wanted to give Staten Island something different and show people that they don’t always have to go to expensive places like Starbucks.

Koze Cafe not only serves delicious pastries and fresh refreshers made from scratch, but also light meals during the day such as sandwiches and salads. In the evening there is a dinner menu with popular items like mac and cheese, cornbread, and honey barbecue wings.

But what makes Koze Cafe stand out is the fact that it teaches patrons how to be a “plant parent”. Shana hosts events and classes that range from learning to grow a plant, to plant trivia, and even hands-on experience with plant care. She even offers in-home plant consultations. All of this was inspired by Shana’s own struggles with mental health, and how caring for plants helped her cope with depression and anxiety.

At Koze Cafe classes, Shana focuses on the importance of planting a seed and emphasizes the need to stay present. She stressed that anyone can learn to become a plant parent, and her clients range from corporate companies to people from all walks of life. Her friendly attitude and welcoming demeanor help to create a connection with customers, and ensure they keep coming back.
